1. What Are Cookies?

Cookies are small text files placed on your device (computer, tablet, or phone) by websites you visit. They are widely used to make websites work efficiently, to remember your preferences, and to provide information to site operators. Cookies may be "session cookies" (deleted when you close your browser) or "persistent cookies" (which remain on your device for a set period or until you delete them).

In addition to traditional cookies, this site uses browser localStorage and sessionStorage for authentication tokens. These function similarly to cookies but are only accessible to the website that set them.

2. Cookies and Tracking Technologies We Use

The following table describes all cookies and tracking technologies used on ptxcanopies.ca:

Cookie / KeyProviderPurposeTypeDuration
_ga, _ga_*Google AnalyticsDistinguishes unique website visitors and tracks sessions. The _ga cookie persists for 2 years; _ga_* (measurement ID) persists for 2 years.Analytics2 years
__stripe_mid, __stripe_sidStripeUsed by Stripe during the checkout flow to prevent fraud and to associate your browser session with your payment attempt. Set only when you proceed to checkout.Functional / SecuritySession / 1 year
CognitoIdentityServiceProvider.*AWS CognitoStores your authentication tokens (access token, ID token, refresh token) in localStorage / sessionStorage to keep you signed in across page loads. These are not traditional HTTP cookies but browser storage entries with equivalent function.Essential / AuthenticationSession (refreshed automatically)
__Secure-next-auth.*, next-auth.*Next.js / ApplicationSession management tokens used by the Next.js application layer to maintain your authenticated session state on the server.EssentialSession

3. Google Analytics Cookies

We use Google Analytics (measurement ID: G-6JG2B1KHDL) to understand how visitors interact with our website. Google Analytics collects information such as:

  • Pages visited and time spent on each page
  • The website or source that referred you to our site
  • Device type, operating system, and browser
  • Approximate geographic location (country and province — not precise location)
  • Whether you are a new or returning visitor

Google Analytics data is aggregated and anonymized — it does not identify you personally. We have configured Google Analytics with IP anonymization enabled, meaning your full IP address is never stored by Google.

This data helps us understand which pages are most popular, how customers find us, and how we can improve our website experience. Because Google Analytics is analytics-only and does not involve marketing or advertising profiling, we do not display a cookie consent banner for it; however, you retain the right to opt out at any time (see Section 5).

4. Stripe Payment Cookies

When you proceed to checkout, Stripe — our payment processor — sets cookies in your browser to:

  • Detect fraudulent payment attempts (bot detection and session continuity)
  • Associate your checkout session with your payment method
  • Comply with PCI DSS requirements for secure payment handling

These cookies are set by Stripe's hosted checkout page, which operates under Stripe's own Privacy Policy. Stripe does not use these cookies for advertising or profiling.

5. How to Opt Out or Manage Cookies

You have several options to control or opt out of cookies:

Browser Settings

All modern browsers allow you to view, block, or delete cookies through the browser's settings or preferences panel. Blocking all cookies may prevent some features of this site from working correctly (including staying signed in).

Google Analytics Opt-Out

You can opt out of Google Analytics tracking by installing the official Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on, or by enabling "Do Not Track" in your browser (note: Google Analytics respects this signal on our site). You can also manage your Google ad settings at adssettings.google.com.

Authentication Storage

To clear your authentication session (Cognito tokens stored in localStorage), simply sign out of your account using the "Sign Out" option in the navigation menu, or clear your browser's local storage in your browser settings. You will be redirected to the homepage.

6. Third-Party Cookies

Beyond the cookies described above, no additional third-party advertising, social media, or tracking cookies are loaded on ptxcanopies.ca. We do not embed third-party social media widgets, advertising networks, or affiliate tracking pixels.

If we add third-party integrations in the future that involve new cookies, we will update this Cookie Policy and add those cookies to the table in Section 2 before they are deployed.

7. Why We Don't Show a Cookie Consent Banner

Under Canada's PIPEDA framework and the guidance of the Office of the Privacy Commissioner, express opt-in consent is required for non-essential cookies when those cookies are used for marketing or cross-site tracking. The cookies used on ptxcanopies.ca fall into two categories:

  • Essential cookies (Cognito authentication, Stripe security) — required for the website to function; exempt from consent requirements.
  • Analytics-only cookies (Google Analytics with IP anonymization) — used solely to understand site traffic in aggregate, not for advertising or user profiling.

Because none of our cookies are used for marketing, advertising, or cross-site user tracking, a cookie consent banner is not required under current Canadian privacy law. You may still opt out at any time using the methods described in Section 5.

8. Changes to This Cookie Policy

We may update this Cookie Policy when we add new technologies or change how we use existing ones. Updates will be reflected by changing the Effective Date below. We encourage you to review this page periodically to stay informed.
